The fishery hosted the Scottish Police Recreation Association championship last Thursday.
The event was held in good fishing conditions, but not all of the anglers found the fish in an obliging mood with many tales of lost fish and missed takes. This was probably due to fishing pressure experienced earlier in the week.
The 2024 individual champion was Brian Carnegie who came in with an amazing catch of 23 fish. He was fishing dries all day off Shear Point and among the reeds up from Tod Hole. Brian has been on good form for a while and his win was richly deserved.
Jimmy McBride was second with 14 and Jamie Picken was 3rd with 13 fish.
The team event was won by West "E". Brian Carnegie, 23, Harris Campbell, 10, Alan Gilbert, 7, and Jamie Picken, 13.
East "A" were second with Malclm Miller, 4, Stewart Marshall, 7, Jimmy McBride, 14, and Roddy McIntyre, 2.
Both teams will fish in the PSUK National competition which we are hosting in June 2025.
Special mention must go to John Curry. John had been trying to get close to risers on the Malling Shore and inadvertently grounded the boat. He decided to make use of the bailer and as he did so, a fish grabbed his fly and pulled his Hardy rod and reel overboard. John jumped out of the boat in his waders and tried to reach the rod tip to retrieve it. As he did do he went off the shelf into deeper water, causing his automatic lifejacket to burst into life. The fish pulled the rod further out and the tip could be deen bobbing around. Undeterred, John got back in the boat, somewhat damp and reversed after the rod tip. He managed to lay hands on it and started to play the fish only for it to fall off at the net. At least he got the rod back.
Thanks to all who attended another great event.

WEE FISH BIG FISH, FRY BASH AND DRY FLY TIME AT THE LAKE.
At the recent Police National Championship, rumour has it that the top tactic was trimmed back cdc dries but I also heard that the fish were fry bashing and then yesterday witnessed trout chasing these roach fry all round the beach after the boats went out. Usually think of pin head fry time from end of May but these ones are well grown but still must be this years hatch.. Made me wonder if the reason we don’t see the pinhead fry earlier is to do with the water temperature stratification not developing earlier….
