I'm WAL meteorologist Kat Campbell. It was an active WRAL weather alert day with several reports of hail. Check out this picture sent in through WRAL reported in Morrisville. There were reports of 1 inch hail. This could be closer to quarter size, so big hail mainly in the northern part of Wake County. In Chatham County, there were reports up to 1.5 diameter. Which is ping pong sized hail. Hail storms and the threat for damaging winds. That's what moved through the area earlier this afternoon. The good news is tonight the intensity of these storms should die down, though there will still be the threat for storms even late tonight, and overnight showers are possible. Futurecast showing another band of rain moving through during the late night hours. Some thunder and lightning would be the main concern. Here even 1 to 3 a.m. we could still have some rain around in the area. Some models are showing a lingering shower in the eastern part of North Carolina early Wednesday morning before a break from the rain until the afternoon. And by the afternoon we see some scattered storms start to pop up. However, with this front pushing a little farther to the south, those storms. May be more concentrated closer to the southern part of our viewing areas, so it looks like the best chance for rain for Wednesday would be closer to the Sandhills in Fayetteville. We can't rule out something popping up in Raleigh, but that chance is only about 30% closer to the triangle. Between 0.5 inch to 3/4 of an inch of rain looking most likely over the next 7 days thanks to this stalled front. And we could still use the rain, even though we're technically running slightly above normal for the month of April at RDU. This spring we're running about 3/4 of an inch below normal, and for 2025 so far, we're nearly 2.5 inches below normal in terms of rainfall. Although we're not under any kind of severe drought, we certainly want to keep seeing the rain if we're going to hold on to the summer-like temperatures in the 80s. High temperatures stay in the upper. 0 to 80s for the next several days with storm chances around 30 to 40% through the work week. Saturday will be our next best chance for rain. That's going to come with a stronger front that finally pushes the stalled front on out of here, and then we get a drop in temperatures for Sunday and early next week, a drop in humidity as well. That'll feel nice with some sunshine, 78 degrees by Sunday. So if you can, I would plan your outdoor events Sunday instead of Saturday.

We are expecting to learn more about a man dead after U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a warrant in connection with a murder.

I'm, uh, Kevin Bis with the Nash County Sheriff's Office. Uh, today myself and Sheriff Stone will be doing a brief interview about an incident that occurred, uh, during a war warrants service, uh, resulting in a suicide, uh, in assistance with the US Marshal Service. Uh, today, April 22nd, 2025, Nash County Sheriff's Office assisted the US Marshals Task Force in attempting to survey. High risk uh arrest warrant for Donald Fields. Fields was a 40 year old black male with a history of violent tendencies and prior weapons and narcotic charges. Uh, Fields also, uh, was wanted in the state of Connecticut as an absconderer and also in the state of New York in association with a second degree murder charge. Shortly after 7:30 this morning, US Marshals Task Force and Nash County deputies arrived at 4892 Crabtree Lane in Nashville, North Carolina. Uh, the suspect was seen outside the residence and when engaged by the US Marshals Task Force, a brief foot chase ensued into the woods located directly behind the residence. When the marshals and the deputies caught up with Donald Fields inside the woods, uh, it was identified that he was holding a pistol to his head. Uh, Fields made a brief statement implying that he was not gonna be taken into custody and then sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deputies and agency immediately attempted life saving interventions uh until EMS arrived, but they were unable to uh successfully save the life of Donald Fields. Fields was pronounced to cease on scene. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was notified, uh, which is our policy in these situations, and are conducting an investigation in association with Nash County Sheriff's Office. I'll now turn over to Sheriff Stone for any questions you may have. Sheriff was Phil's living at this house or was he? Why, why was he in North Carolina? He had um moved here I guess he was an absconder on the run, moved to this residence and we have just found out shortly that this house also had another federal fugitive in it and he's in custody at this time also for federal uh weapons violations from Connecticut or New York. What's the. To the woman I understand Miss Hazel who owns or lives in the house to these men. I had a brief conversation with the uh second defendant earlier and he advised that it was his mother's house and he was just getting it together and this uh individual that we encountered earlier that he was there helping clean up the place to get it ready to move in so they were in the process of allegedly moving in. Sheriff Stone, we've talked at great lengths about the dangers in serving warrants and this proved to sort of be that uh volatile situation. Talk a little bit about, you know, the precautions that you have to take when something can go wrong within a matter of seconds. So I was notified last night by our Marshal Service and I want to commend the Marshal Service for what they do. They go out and get the most dangerous individuals that other law enforcement agencies are not equipped to handle. They tracked down very bad people and take them into custody. It's a very dangerous job, probably one of the most dangerous jobs in federal law enforcement because they could get the worst of the worst. This situation is they had a warrant and they needed a few deputies to go help them, uh, take this person into custody, but as you see they go to a house of crime. They've got two different individuals in there with federal warrants. Both of them had robbery charges or weapons charges, violence. This individual here had a murder conviction and full 20 years in prison, goes back and commits another murder allegedly in New York, and we have warrants on him for second degree murder and the Marshal Service tracked him to this location in Nash County. We were notified last night. They go out to make an arrests today. And it ends up in a shooting of the individual committing suicide. One thing I'd like the public to understand is, yes, this man did commit suicide. Look at the families that it touches. Look at the law enforcement officers it's got to go home and be with their families tonight and relive the situation the rest of their life, seeing somebody shooting himself in the head in front of them. It's not an everyday same situation. It's a very dangerous job, and I want to commend that Marshal Service for doing what they did and our deputies today being on their game so nobody else got hurt. These type of individuals that are roaming the streets are very dangerous individuals they're dangerous to the community and that thin blue line of law enforcement is what stops them from continuing their criminal enterprise as this individual here, he had already been to prison for 20 years and he's already got another warrant for murder, so it's not like that they're not dangerous people. The second individual in this house has weapons violations, and he's of the scander. And they come to places like who would think in Casta in a quiet little neighborhood and move in and you end up with uh this type of activity so it's a very dangerous job and I just commend the Marshal Service and these deputies today for their diligence and helping keep our. safe. Just to clarify, so he served the 20 year sentence, then was he out on probation and parole and then was it, I mean, can you walk us through that? From what I gathered is he was uh committed a robbery and a murder conviction in 2000 and uh from that time he pulled his sentence evidently he has a probation or parole, whichever the state has up there he absconds from that. The local authorities up there did not have the ability to find him. They utilize the United States Marshal Service. They track him down and they find him in a home here. It was in Connecticut with Robert. That is correct. And then he has a murder warrant from the city of New York or the state of New York. So when he got out, he allegedly committed another murder. That is correct. Sheriff, was anyone else in the home at the time of the self-inflicted shooting? There was, there was uh Lonnie Howley. Um, and he is wanted also out of Connecticut on federal violations of firearms. That's the one you were talking about that I talked to him earlier today and then lo and behold, uh, there was warrants on him also and also our narcotics team has been activated and they're in the process of conducting a search warrant this time for narcotics in the home. Lonnie Holly spelling the first name L O N N I E, last name Hawley. H A W L E Y. Two questions. How is he related to the dead suspect and did they go there looking for this second guy too? No, they did not know that Lonnie was at this residence or had any warrants on him until the deputies uh started conducting interviews of the self-inflicted shooting and then they found out he had warrants on him. From my understanding the brief conversation that I had with him today, he was some. Type of kin to our uh deceased. So how is the 2nd individual or is he a 3rd individual? What's that, ma'am? You said that there were two individuals, the dead guy and someone else who had um federal charges. How was that person. Howley was the 2nd person. He allegedly he was in the house when the deputies and the Marshal Service arrived and he came outside after the incident. Can you specify what kind of weapon? That field use you said the pistol was like a revolver or some automatic. It was his gun. It appears to be that it's a 9 millimeter semi-automatic weapon. uh, he is a convicted felon. He should not have a weapon. That's the last thing a felon needs as a weapon and uh I don't know if that gun is stolen. The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting that. Investigation at this time because it is an incident where we felt it would be best since we were involved in the onset of it to let another agency come in so they're checking the status of that weapon, but from the weapon that I saw appears to be a 9 millimeter semi-automatic weapon and uh it still had several rounds in the magazine. So if he had not committed suicide, he would have also been taken into custody posses. That is correct. Uh, how long, sorry, go ahead. How close were your deputies and marshals to this man when he pulled the trigger and were they in any danger of being shot at? Absolutely they're in danger, um. When the deputies pulled up in the United States Marshal Service pulled up, he was in the backyard, uh, cleaning up around a bulldog or an American terrier, and he sees the deputies he has a weapon on him. He takes off, crosses a fence. The deputy pursues him, jumps the fence, and runs probably 150, 200 yards in the woods, uh, the individual. Then turns around and the deputy challenges him and then the comments are made that he can't be taken back that he can't go through this or something of that nature, uh, takes the gun and sticks it to his head and pulls the trigger. From the scene when I went down and looked at it, he was no more than 1015 yards from me, but at least it's an incident where the individual did not make law enforcement have to make that decision to end his life. He did it on his own. And and his mother is not there. Uh, this was all information that I got from the second party who was also a federal fugitive. We suspect in or out of the house. He was outside of the house when I spoke to him, but he was inside the house when the onset of the, uh, foot pursuit and it was initiated. How long do you anticipate them living there and kind of holding up in this house in Castilia? Any idea? Well, they were still moving stuff in so you know who knows. He is in custody at this time and they're conducting search one on the home at this time. Do we know what Fields was um seen before he came to North Carolina? Like any last particular time he may have been spotted by anyone in law enforcement. I don't. That would be the United States Marshal Service. I don't inquire into their great, uh, ability to track individuals. I just know that usually when the United States Marshals start tracking someone they will soon be in custody. Has there been a next of kin identified to claim the suspect's remains? Uh, the next of kin was notified, but he is in custody at this time. Oh, he's incarcerated. He's in custody. He's Hall, yes. So Halls. He tells me that they are related. I didn't get deep in conversation with that. Homeowner face any charges this Holly is supposed to be the homeowner is supposed to be part owner of this home, and he is in custody at this time. Of Holly was part owner of the house. That is what I was told with his with his mother and Holly is related to. Any other questions? Uh, probably less than 1 mile. This is a quaint neighborhood, uh, up a path, a non non assuming brick home that's all off the road, but it's an actual address. It is correct. Thank you thank you thank you thank you.
